Orienteering Essentials for Training, Racing & Outdoor Navigation

Small accessories often make a big difference during an event. While shoes, clothing and a compass form the foundation of your kit, practical items such as control description holders, map holders, waterproof map cases and whistles help make navigation easier and improve safety.

This category brings together accessories used for foot orienteering, mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) and outdoor navigation. Many of these products are also useful for hiking, camping, adventure racing and outdoor education.

The right kit helps keep important information visible, protect maps from the weather and ensure you’re prepared for both training and competition.

Choosing Your Kit

What you need depends on the type of activity and the conditions.

Control description holders keep race information easy to read while running. Handlebar-mounted map holders keep maps visible during mountain bike orienteering, while waterproof map cases help protect paper maps during hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. Many forest events also require competitors to carry a whistle as part of the compulsory safety equipment.

Many competitors begin with the basics and gradually add items as they gain experience and discover what works best for the events they enjoy.
